TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now)- Doctors and health officials are seeing signs that the U.S. may be heading into a severe flu season. 

Flu cases are spiking across the country and here in Arizona. 

While out shopping or in any public place, people should take extra care.  Confirmed cases of influenza in Arizona have increased more than 4,000 percent compared to this time last flu season, and Arizona is not alone. 

This year's flu season is off to an early start all across the country.  41 states are reporting widespread flu activity. 

The season usually peaks in late January or early February, but already activity has really picked up in many states.  Some are predicting this could be the worst flu season in years. 

Experts say each flu season is unique and it's unknown why one may start earlier or later than another. 

People know the symptoms – fever, cough, fatigue, head and body aches.  Some who are at higher risk and complications are those over 65, pregnant women and children. 

Doctors say vaccination is the best prevention.  They also recommend washing your hand to keep clean.
